Zimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe and formerly Rhodesia, the Republic of Rhodesia, is a landlocked country located in the southern part of the African continent, between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique to the east. Zimbabwe has three official languages: English, Shona (the Bantu language with the most native speakers), and Ndebele (also a Bantu language). Despite English being the official language, less than 2.5% consider it their native language.
Zimbabwe began as the British crown colony of Southern Rhodesia, created from land held by the British South Africa Company. Zimbabwe is a semi-presidential system republic, which has a parliamentary government. Under the constitutional changes in 2005, an upper chamber, the Senate, was reinstated. The House of Assembly is the lower chamber of Parliament.
Mineral exports, agriculture, and tourism are the main foreign currency earners of Zimbabwe. The mining sector remains very lucrative, with some of the world’s largest platinum reserves.
